Although the rustic trend has been popular for years now, it shows no signs of slowing down. The problem is that so many rustic weddings end up looking alike – the same wooden touches, burlap backgrounds, kraft paper, and mason jars. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these items, of course. They all work look beautiful together and that’s one of the many reasons why they are so popular! However, it makes it a bit hard to come up with your own unique look.
One way around this is to put a French spin on your rustic wedding! You can still incorporate many of the most common elements of a typical rustic wedding, but now there are so many new ideas you can add which will make your wedding even more beautiful. Rather than thinking of Paris itself and all its cosmopolitan style, focus on the French countryside and areas like Provence.
I actually have a Pinterest board all about Rustic French weddings, which I’ll be sharing some of these ideas from. The board is here, so feel free to follow along there as well.
Now, here are some elements to consider incorporating into your own rustic French wedding.
You can’t even think about visiting Provence, France without seeing all the gorgeous purple lavender. The lavender fields there are full of these amazing plants. Luckily, they happen to go perfectly with rustic touches such as mason jars and burlap ribbon. You can have wooden tables with lace and burlap table runners and then scattered vases filled with lavender. Or you can wrap a lavender bouquet in a burlap ribbon. Lavender branches can even be scattered among the cake and cookies at the dessert table.
You can use purple, soft gray, or silver as wedding colors and they would match this theme perfectly.
2. More Feminine Touches
It’s true, in most rustic weddings you will see lots of lace, sunflowers, mason jars (of course!) and other feminine bits. However, when planning a French wedding, there are many ways to take it further and make it even more elegant. For one thing, you can mix a lot of beads and sparkles into your decor – think an old, antique French chandelier hanging in a rustic old building in Provence. Some of my favorite wedding decor photos show long, wooden and weathered tables with an antique beaded chandelier hanging overhead, and lots of sparkly cut glass on the table. It’s best to use clear beads rather than gold or colored to get the right effect.
Another idea is to use lots of white, tulle fabric – tie it over the back of your chair (and possibly add a sprig of lavender), toss it over a rustic photo backdrop, or bunch it around your masons jars instead of the typical burlap and lace. Tulle just screams French, and isn’t too fussy so it won’t compete with your rustic feel.
3. Artisan French Breads and Wine
It’s up to you if you use these French favorites as a decor theme at your reception, or just have lots of it available for guests to satisfy their hunger, but either way it can be an integral part of your French rustic vibe. The easiest way to get the look you are going for is to use lots of old baskets or even little crates. You can stack these up on a weathered old wooden table and fill them with loaves of artisan bread or individual rolls and buns, whichever is easier. (I’ve even seen them used as escort cards, with a label attached to each loaf with twine!) Wine bottles can be displayed with burlap or lace wrapped around them, or you can purchase printed wine bottle labels customized to match your decor.
4. White, white, everywhere
To get a clean, chic French country look one of the biggest secrets is to incorporate as much white decor as you can. From vintage tablecloths, to tons of white candles, to big old fashioned flowers, white will suggest a rustic French chateau especially when combined with the items mentioned above. A garden setting would be spectacular!
By incorporating the simple ideas above, plus adding in your own unique style, you can create a dream wedding that makes you feel like you’re celebrating in the French countryside! I’ve also added a few invitations and other wedding trinkets below that you can customize to add just the right touch to your rustic French wedding.
